Sample on Human Memory Human Memory Dec 19, 2018 in Psychology What You Need to Know about Human Memory When you are asked a question that requires you to relate to an event that occurred a while ago, the moment you open your mouth to recant the said event, you find out that you almost seem to relieve it as you go on. The feelings come rushing back as well as the sounds, the sights, the smells, the feelings and all of the emotions you felt at that particular time become almost instantly fresh again. This phenomenon occurs irrespective of the type of event you are trying to remember, whether pleasurable or traumatic but sometimes more so when it is a traumatic experience. The recalling of the event is a classic case of the memory of the individual at work. Memory is the capacity of the mind to remember and recall some things. Memory is a very important part of the human personality; humans and their reactions are a function of the memories that we have created. The part of the brain that is responsible for the acquisition storage and retrieval of memory is the temporal lobe. This part of the brain is located lateral to the skull and just above both ears (Gray, Pick Howden, 1977). This temporal lobe is also responsible for the sense of smell. This is especially significant when you notice that a particular smell/scent almost literally takes you to a different place or reminds you very poignantly about something.

Shirley Jacksons The Lottery is an allegorical depiction of societys flaws and cruel principles and the effects they have on its citizens and more specifically, its women. The literal level of The Lottery illustrates a towns chilling tradition of a random selection of death by stoning of a certain person. Figuratively, however, one aspect of Jacksons short story bravely reveals the reality of societys control over women by placing on them expectations and limitations. The Lottery begins with a description of a bright and serene setting. The morning the event took place was clear and sunny, with a fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green (Jackson†¦show more content†¦The use of the word, men folk alone, portrays Jacksons emphasis on the separation between men and women and the simple fact that the women wearing faded dresses, and sweaters, came shortly after their men folk places a domination over women by men. As observed by critic Peter Kosenko, their dresses indicate that they do in fact work, but because they work in the home and not within a larger economy in which work is regulated by finance (money), they are treated by men and treat themselves inferior (29). Even in maternity, societys women are portrayed inferior to men. While women naturally take on the role of child-bearing, men are superior in the household as depicted in The Lottery. As people gather at the outset of the story, the women stand `by their husbands, and Jackson sharply distinguishes female form male authority: when Mrs. Martin calls her son Bobby, he `ducked under his mothers grasping hand and ran, laughing, back to the pile of stones, but when `his father spoke up sharply, Bobby `came quickly and took his place between his father and his oldest brother (Oehlschlaeger 260). The women of the village were not allowed to go up to the box and select a slip of paper themselves and if their husbands were injured or deceased it was necessary to send their oldest son to choose it. Malcolm X is known for being one of the more radical Civil Rights Leaders even though he never called himself one. Instead, he was a minister for the Nation of Islam. Before his trip to Mecca, Malcolm told an identity story at the 5-year-old level, it was an innovative story that taught that the white man was the devil and blacks and whites should be separated. After his trip to Mecca, his story changed drastically to be an identity story at the 10-year-old level, it is an innovative story with visionary elements that said that Islam was the way toward eliminating the race problem in America and that there was indeed a way for blacks and whites to live in harmony. This is a spinoff of the true Islam of the East, and as such, is a twist on a traditional story which makes it an innovative one. While Malcolm may add some visionary elements to the story regarding the treatment of colored people, he is not saying anything that has not been said before and as such he is not a visionary leader. Malcolm’s story was formed based on experiences he had growing up as well as being influenced by a wide range of readings, people, and teachings. While he didn’t have the best childhood, it taught him many important things that had a lasting impact on him as a leader. At an early age he was introduced to violence, poverty, and segregation. When he was six, his father was brutally murdered, and his mother was then sent to a mental hospital which split up him and his siblings. This left the family very poor and Malcolm reacted by resorting to stealing. At the age of thirteen he was sent to a detention center during which one of his first shifts in thinking occurred, regarding his view of white people. He left after the 8th grade to move in with Ella and by the time he was 16 he had started being influenced negatively by his environment and he got his real start in a path of crime. Racisms Kwame Anthony Appiah addresses the issues of racialism, intrinsic racism, and extrensic racism in his article entitled RACISMS. However, after analyzing Appiah's views on racism and its different forms, his views on the theoretical validity of racialism and extrinsic racism are seriously doubted. Appiah defines racialism as ?the view that there are essentail characteristics that allow us to classify people into distinct races, each of which shares certain traits and tendencies?. On this topic, Appiah thinks that this theory, or way of categorizing people is false. He thinks that it is merely an excuse for people to practice types of racism. Among the two most distinct types of racism are intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic racism consists of people who differentiate morally between members of different races because they ?believe that each race has a different moral status, quite independent of the moral characteristics entailed by its racial essence.? For the intrinsic racist there is no moral, intellectual, cultural, or perhaps even physical trait or act in relevancy to a member of another race that would merit equal treament. Extrinsic racists make moral distinctions between members of other races because they believe that the racial essence entails certain morally relevant qualities. The extrinsic racist's discrimintation stems from the belief that different races are different genetically, and these genetic differences constitute different treatment and expectations. Even with evidence that states otherwise, evidence that points that a person of another race is intelligent, or noble, there is nothing that can deter the extrinsic racist's perceptions about those of another race. But, the extrinsic racist may in fact have friends or loved ones in that race.It is this belief that leads Appiah to believe that these individuals have a ?cognitive incapacity?, or an inability to reason. Appiah comments early on that racialism is a false concept, or view. His grounds for his claim is that it serves as a presupposition to two types of racism, extrinsic and intrinsic. However, he is only keeping in consideration a few results and purposes of racialism. When Appiah looks at racialism, he sees that it is a science that allows us to classify people into distinct races based on character traits and tendencies. In his perspective, this serves no further purpose but to validate racism, and that it is a concept that is false in theory. The truth of the matter is there are certain obvious differences based on race. Most apparent is skin color, and other physical characteristics like hair, eyes, lips, etc. That fact alone weakens Appiah's argument racialism is false. This weakens Appiah's argument because when he says that racialism is false in theory, part of what he saying that either there are no traits that allow us to classify people into races. Certain physical characteristics are evident in races and allows us to classify by race. The second part of Appiah's argument regarding racialism is that racialism also classifies on character tendencies originating from race. It is generally agreed that race had no create character tendencies, morals, and actions. However, race can indirectly play a role in the development of many characteristics. Race is becoming less of a factor as more and more people engage in racial mixed relationships. But it is a factor. Certain races are more inclined to be a part of certain cultures, with their own respective value systems. For instance, being born Chinese does not automatically make you good at kung-fu, give you more of a natural ability to draw, or a more respectable person. However, due to the history of the chinese, and the culture behind it their are certain traits that a chinese individual would be more likely to take on. Chinese may be more likey to draw well because of calligraphy, in which every word is basically a little picture. this obviously would help to develop control over the pen. The culture of the chinese has a very heavy influence on respecting one's parents and the elderly, which would undoubtably make older individuals seem more honorable or wise. So in that case, race does indeed have an impact on character tendencies and behavior. It shows that race can have a connection to culture and upbringing, which does relate to the type of person that will develop. This is where Appiah's theory that racialism is a presupposition to to racism comes into play. These cultural characteristics can easily be mistaken for racial characteristics. Alfred Stieglitz essays Alfred Stieglitz: The Legendary Photographer One of the most influential men in the field of photography was Alfred Stieglitz. The first art photographer in the United States, Stieglitz more than any other American compelled the recognition of photography as a fine art. He spent his life fighting for the recognition of photography as a valid art form. In 1923, he was asked if he would give the Museum of Fine Arts some of his photographs. This was significant because it was the first time that a major American Art Museum included photographs or even considered them for display. In 1924, Stieglitz sent 27 photographs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was the first photographer to reach this achievement in America. He became standard that all photography was compared to in the United States. Had Alfred Stieglitz never taken a photograph in his life, he would still be numbered among the most significant influences in American cultural life in the period before the World War II. In 1883, at the age of 19, he took his first pictures while attending a school in Berlin. He decided to challenge that theory and set up his camera in a small cellar. The cellar was lit only by weak electric light bulb and focused on a dynamo. Then he made a 24 hour exposure which resulted in a perfect negative. This negative effectively rebuked the necessity of daylight. Later in his life, Stieglitz took the first successful "rainy day", "snow storm" and "night" photographs.
